Mr. Fletcher’s class have been learning about the Ancient Greeks.

Mr. Fletcher’s class (Year 3) have been learning about the Ancient Greeks in History. During Literacy lessons they have been writing from the viewpoint of a character – either an attacking Persian soldier or an Athenian soldier defending his country from the invading Persians who are at the Bay of Marathon. Can you work out whether the writer is an Athenian or a Persian? We expect that you can understand how each character feels when you read their exciting writing!

William: My warriors were in a war. First we stood still. The Persians were only 6metres away from the sand. When they got there we charged but we didn’t run very fast because we had really heavy armour.

Luke: I was sad, not just nervous, because I might never see my wife and family again. Our army was trembling. We ran to them but we couldn\t run very fast because we had 3m spears and heavy shields.

Harry R: We are about to go into battle. I have a feeling it will be bad weather. I have my brother by my side. We must fight together for we are both in the army. I have to protect him because he is younger than me. Slash, slash. We’re winning! Now I’m feeling great. Wow-wee. We have won. Victory is ours! I am so happy. Praise the gods. We will be happy for many a long year now.

Daniel: I am very scared and nervous. I am standing tall with my 3m spear. I have a big shield but I am shaking.

Levi: We are shaking with fear because we are so scared. I can’t move because I am that frightened. I only have a spear as my weapon and when I throw it I am just going to run from the battle. I will take off my armour and drop my shield so that I can run faster. I am going to run to my home and see if my family are still alive.

Michael F: I have been worried from the start of this. I am very frightened and I am only 6 years old. I wish that I had never joined now but I am doing this for my country. They are coming. I hope I don’t get killed.

Sam the Greek: My soldiers and me are nervous but we are always ready for battle. We only do it for our country. Now the Persians are only 60 metres away and our archers are trying to kill them on their boats. When they get near enough we will use our spears to kill as many Persians as possible. “Charge“, shouts the Commander. We charge at the Persians for we are a bit worried now.

Sam the Persian: We are on our boats and we will kill all the pathetic, wimpy Greeks for we’re the mighty Persians. As we speak we are firing our arrows at the Greeks, wiping them out one by one. The wimpy Greeks think that they can stop us by poking us with their sticks. Crash – we have reached the Bay of Marathon.

Sophie: I am cross with the Persians for invading my country. I hope we win because my family might die. I am dressed for battle. Now I am very afraid. My family were crying as I left. I was crying too. My heart is beating faster. My blood is going round my body faster. They are coming nearer. I can’t stand it but I still need to fight.

Lauren: They are coming closer and closer every minute. I am getting shakier every minute.
